Westport
is a bustling town, largish by local standards, yet countryside can be
seen at the end of all its streets. The town is one of the few planned
settlements in Ireland, built in 1780 for Peter Browne, second Earl of
Altamont, as an adjunct to Westport House. It still benefits from
a certain 18th century dignity and style. Bridge Street and James Street
lead to The Mall, attractively lined with lime trees, which follows both
banks of the canalised river Carrowbeg through town.
For those wishing to take in a leisurely game of golf, there is nearby Clew Bay Golf Course. The course is located in an outstanding scenic area with magnificent views of Clew Bay, its islands and Croagh Patrick. (098) 41730 The town offers visitors Westport Leisure Park with its 25M pool.
